Food Vs. Braces: How to Manage New Eating Habits

Dr. Kevin Hogan • Oct 02, 2019

The list of foods that you should avoid always seems to be longer than the ones that are ok to eat, unfortunately. However, your new diet will not only benefit your teeth’s progression it will also stimulate your overall physical and mental health. Caramel, nuts, chips, licorice, taffy, gum and hard foods are definite no’s when it comes to caring for your braces since they are known to cause damage to the wires and brackets that support your braces . Also, keep in mind that items that have strong colorants like berries, grape juice, and beets have a tendency to stain the elastic ligatures placed on the brackets of your braces.

Even though dealing with braces will force you to think outside the box when it comes to your meals for the first few months, you’ll be amazed by which foods you can still enjoy if they’re prepared correctly. Once the soreness of your new braces has subsided and you are better adjusted with them in your mouth you are able to consume foods such as:

  • Smoothies
  • Burritos
  • Pizza
  • Seafood dishes
  • Pasta
  • Soft Pieces of bread
  • Marshmallows

There are way more foods that are out there that you should steer clear from and one that you can still eat that are not on this list. If you would like more information on these or you’re orthodontic treatment , contact us at Smiles by Hogan to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hogan . Our offices are located in Mt Pleasant, South Carolina for your convenience.
